The Osmize

An osmiza, (osmica in Slovenian), is a typical place on the Karst plateau, between Italy and Slovenia, where local wines and products (such as eggs, hams, salamis and cheeses) are sold and consumed directly on the premises and in the cellars of the farmers who produce them. Osmize are widespread throughout the province of Trieste and, to a lesser extent, in the Slovenian coast.

The farmers of the Karst take turns continuing their cellars and hanging branches nearby to guide the customers to their homes. The opening period can be longer than eight days and is calculated on the basis of the quantity of wine produced. The choice of period is a discretion of the farmers. The osmize are meeting places where you can sip a good house wine accompanied by platters of cured meats and cheeses produced on site.
